Thus is Claire painfully launched through the stone circle to land in the middle of a battle between an English army regiment and a Scottish Highland clan in war-torn Scotland in the year 1743. Forced to leave behind her husband and life as she knows it until she can figure out what has happened and how to get back home, the journey Claire embarks upon is anything but boring.

The stubborn, strong willed, ex-army nurse with the mouth of a sailor, quickly sticks out like a sore thumb in this new world. The simplest of things like the clothes she wears turn life threatening. Thankfully she falls into the right hands…eventually. And of course James Fraser - handsome Highland warrior, trouble maker, and hero, just to name a few things - is quite the attraction as they are forced into one crazy situation after another during the Scottish uprising.

Gabaldon does a magnificent job of painting a picture of this fascinating time period with all its trials and tribulations. And Claire’s adventures fairly rocket along. But Gabaldon is anything but predictable. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you know where Claire is headed.

Yes, with 20 th century healing skills, and the knowledge of simple hygiene and disinfectant on her side, Claire is able to save the lives of patients that would have otherwise died but … can she save her own? Will she use her knowledge of 18 th century Scottish and British histories to stop the bloody battle of Culloden, which she knows will change Scotland forever. Or is the fate of the people she has come to love already sealed? And what about her old life and husband back in the 20 th century? Is Frank and the memory of heated indoor plumbing enough to take her back through an excruciating journey through the stones … leaving behind her new love?

Ah well, climb into that hammock and find out
