A Conversation with The Secret co-producer Paul Harrington

Paul Harrington

Betsy - I feel like we’re compatriots you and I.

Paul - When we were in development on The Secret, and then getting into production, people very kindly kept saying, “I’ve just seen this amazing movie called What the BLEEP Do We Know!? - you should see it.”

When we did finally import a copy from Amazon.com, we just sat around afterwards going, “Holy crap! How are we going to compete with this?” Of course it’s not about competition. But we sure realized the bar had been raised! It’s been an inspiration for us to capture the same sort of production standards and to really deliver the same depth of information in a commercial and yet entertaining way. That’s what we hope we’ve done with this film. And we really appreciate you guys for inspiring us in that way.

Betsy - Well I’d like to thank you. And I’m curious to see if you had kind of the same reaction as I did watching The Secret when you sat and watched The Bleep. As I was sitting there, at first I had the attitude of “I know this already. I’m not going to see anything new. I’m going to watch this because I should.” And after maybe the first 10 minutes I really got sucked in. And it was so great for me in my own personal life and what I’m doing now… it really helped me shift my perception. And I want to thank you. Because I really don’t get anything from The BLEEP anymore because I’ve seen it 19 million times, and I tend to watch it with a critical eye. So it was really great to watch The Secret and hear a lot of the same things said in a very different way. You just can’t hear this information enough.

Paul - We see people writing to us on our forum who are watching the film daily, and we just are amazed. You forget sometimes when you watch it so often in the edit bay - you really don’t see it anymore. But it’s true that each of the people in the movie has something valid to say … like Fred Alan Wolf, who was in both movies. He just has this wonderful warm personality that jumps off the screen at you. And he’s amusing. But when you listen to his words and appreciate what it is that he is saying, I think that’s what allows you to really get something out of this over and over again.

Betsy - Was this subject matter something that you had been into your whole life or something that just came about? How did The Secret come about?

Paul - You know it wasn’t anything that appealed to me. It’s something that was brought into our team by Rhonda Byrne - the principle and founder of our company. Rhonda discovered this over a holiday late in 2004. She came in sometime in early 2005, and said “I’ve got something new. This is something I really want to create. And we need to work out how we’re going to deliver this to the world.”  Next > 1 2 3 4 5 6
