A Conversation with Paul Harrington - Page 6

Paul - Rhonda had a vision that she wanted to release to the world all at once. She would come to me with ideas like that and I’d say, “That’s never been done. That can’t be done.” And she would just stare at me. Then I’d remember, “That’s right. I’m not supposed to use the word ‘can’t.’” So we had as our vision to go out to the whole world in 24 hours on television. It was a grand vision, which we weren’t able to pull off for various reasons. We were trying to force, to control the “how” of the universe, when what we were supposed to do was just focus on the vision and the outcome that we wanted everybody to be able to see this all at once.

So Rhonda challenged me, and my first reaction was to call my associate producer into my office and throw the challenge at him. A couple hours later he showed me a television commercial by a beer company in Australia that was released as a viral campaign and within a couple of weeks it had been seen by millions around the world. They used technology called Vividas, which had just become available, and was still in testing. Coincidentally, the company's office is two miles around corner from our office, which blew us away. Melbourne isn’t exactly the capital of Internet technology. And yet this company had emerged and developed this product and they were thrilled to work with us on this project.

Betsy - How many people have downloaded it and seen it do you think?

Paul - In our early stages - and this is very satisfying - we were finding that about 90% of the people who were downloading it were buying the DVD. I don’t have the download figures in front of me, but I know we’re pushing towards 100,000 DVD sales a month since April.

Betsy - Our original DVDs sold over a million copies, and were really excited about the multi-disk set which we’re launching this August. We basically took all of the great parts of the interviews and built a five-hour version of the movie and added another five hours of interviews and are releasing that through Fox.

I’m really impressed with what you guys were able to accomplish. And I think the movie is wonderful. It’s something everybody should see. I think it’s so important that we make sure that we share this information. BLEEP came out of nowhere and was revolutionary two years ago. Now this whole spiritual cinema genre is becoming revolutionary within the film industry itself. Now you’re revolutionary in what you’re doing, and that’s great! It’s time for a shift

Paul - Yes, it’s encouraging that people are opening up to more than the regular crash and shoot ‘em up Hollywood production blockbusters, that producers now want to do films that can make a difference. There are people working within the system achieving great things. It’s great we can be on this journey.
