Intro by Betsy Chasse

I’d like to introduce all of you to my husband. Dr. Gordon J. Grobelny, who you may remember as the very handsome guitar player in the opening train station scene of the film. (No, I’m not prejudiced!) In addition to being a great guitar player and song writer, Dr. Grobelny, aka. Dr. Gordie, was inspired by his own chiropractor to begin Touch For Health courses in 1980, after which he decided on a career in chiropractic. Dr. Grobelny did his undergraduate and graduate work at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and received his degree in Chiropractic from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, Ontario in 1990. He has pursued extracurricular study under Dr. Dan Gleeson, a Diplomat of The International College of Applied Kinesiology, Efrim Svirski at the Institute of Cranial Therapy, and Tony Robbins. He is certified in NLP and NAC (Neuro Linguistic Programming and Neuro Associated Conditioning). Dr. Grobelny is continuing his learning with Dr. John Brimhall and the Upledger Institute, as well as ongoing studies in Applied Kinesiology. Currently he is pursuing his Diplomat status in ICAK (Applied Kinesiology) and working closely with ICAK Diplomat Gleeson in the practice and development of Holographic Kinesiology. It should go without saying, but I’d better not leave this out - that he integrates the concepts of consciousness, quantum physics and intentionality in his healing practice.

We are very pleased he will be contributing to our newsletter on health related topics. To find out more about him or to read more articles on health from many other distinguished practitioners, please see his website mytotalsupplements.com

To Your Bleepin’ Health

by Dr. Gordie

"What should I eat? What foods are good for me? Which foods are bad?" These are some of the most common questions I face in clinical practice. There is so much information available today, from so many sources, that it becomes very confusing. The more one digs in, the more difficult it can be to find answers. The information available spans from

current professional allopathic apathy towards nutrition, to the extremes of practitioners in the natural health care world making extraordinary claims about individual products or specific regimens of diet.

Diet, what we eat and drink, provides the fuel to power, grow, repair and rebuild our physical bodies. And yet something so basic for survival, and so potentially pleasurable, has for many become an addiction and a real stressor. Statistics show that today Americans are significantly more overweight and obese than in years previous. This brings with it health concerns and economic concerns. In this article I’m not going to tell you what to eat, we can go over that in the future. Right now I want to talk about something really simple that can make a big difference, and that is: Although WHAT you eat is important. HOW you eat is far more important

In our nervous system we have "Structural" (location) and "Functional" (performance) division. The autonomic system has both structural "locations of origin" and functional "performance of origin." It is comprised of two functional divisions, each stemming from specific structural locations. The sympathetic system is the autonomic subdivision that prepares the body for "fight or flight." Originating from the thoracic and lumbar spine (backbone) region, this is the system that is related to the adrenal glands and their response to stress.

Whenever we are stimulated sympathetically, we are prepared for action. Blood is diverted from the kidneys, the digestive systems and skin and redirected to the muscles, heart, and brain. This is how the body prepares to act for survival. What is important here is that any time you get pushed into a fight or flight response, your sympathetic system turns on, thus turning off digestion. The kicker here is that your brain and nervous system don’t know the difference between a "real" threat and a "perceived" one. So, you’re sitting there having lunch and doing business, or eating while you drive, or any of the other activities we combine with eating to save time... and what’s happening? You are turned on for action, when what you need is to be turned on for digestion. As s result, you digest inefficiently and, while your body will get what energy it can from your food, much of the valuable nutrition is missed. This in turn creates deficiencies and the cravings to fill them. (Munchies anyone?) So slow down and chew your food. Relax. Bless your food. Say grace.

The parasympathetic system, which is the subdivision for rest, regeneration, and digestion, originates from the 10th cranial (skull) vagus nerve and from nerves in your sacrum (middle of your buttocks). The vagus nerve supplies the chest and abdomen down to the level of the belly button where the sacral nerves take over. When you sit still and close your eyes, whether you are praying, meditating, focusing, chanting, etc. you allow your body to change systems – you become parasympathetic. Now, with a body that is relaxed and prepared, bless your food; give it a conscious mission. Let the observer within you collapse the waves of healthy intent and imbed them along with the actual particles of your food. Regardless of where your food came from, give it a blessing as an act of conscious creation. Tell it what you want it to do. Observe it as if it already is done. So be it. Now enjoy your food, staying relaxed and joyful.

And remember, this can all be done quietly with no one else the wiser. Try eating like this and see what happens to your body, your mind, your food cravings, and your life.

Dr. Gordon J. Grobelny, D.C.
